Pope John Paul II Residence
Housing for the Physically Disabled Pople
In order to serve persons facing not only financial and emotional but also physical challenges, the St. Leo Campus for Veterans contains a Section 811 Supportive Housing for Persons with Physical Disabilities facility, called the Pope John Paul II Residence. Consisting of 14 units, the facility is operated by Catholic Charities Housing Development Corporation.
The Pope John Paul II Residence, opened in 2007, is specially designed for persons with physical disabilities who meet HUD's income requirements, are 18 years of age or older, and have a physical impairment which is expected to be of long and indefinite duration, substantially impedes the person's ability to live independently, and is of a nature that such ability could be improved by more suitable housing conditions. Preference is given to applicants who currently have no means of housing, currently reside in substandard housing or currently paying more than 50% of income for rent and utilities.
All rents are subsidized under a rental assistance program. Eligible households pay no more than 30% of their adjusted gross income for rent and utilities, excluding telephone. Deductions are made for elderly status for the household head and allowable medical expenses. After initial occupancy, annual recertification of income and medical deductions will take place.
